    18 to 16 to 14 to 12. Subtracting by two each time.

    18, multiplying by 9 each time.

    There's no such pattern. If there were, we'd know how "9 = 90" ... The only pattern we see is that every right-hand-side value is equal to the product of: a) the left-hand-side value; and b) one plus the left-hand-side value.

    You can get the pattern wthout assuming anything by using the way doctorquant lists it. Basically, the right side is the number on the left multplied by that number plus one. So 3= 3(3+1)=12.
