I mostly played doubles. It was much easier to have a match as a decent player. Unlike tennis, singles is best for truly top shelf players.

Pickleball is much more bark than bite. I've watched it and as someone above said the sound of ball and paddle is unfulfilling.

CrossFit 3-5 mornings a week for the last 7 years. During the lockdown our gym ran home workouts over Zoom and let us each take a small piece of equipment home. Then by june we did outdoor, distanced group workouts in the parking lot. By late fall we were back inside, masked, which was tough. We’ve been unmasked since the mask mandates were lifted, but we’re in a high vaccinated, low covid area (suburbs west of Boston). Only one positive (asymptomatic) case in our gym in all that time.

I also walk/hike a couple miles with my dog every day - lots of trails and a great state park nearby where dogs are allowed off leash. Ozzy is a 30-pound cockapoo who looks like a stuffed animal, but he outdoes the labs and german shepherds we know.

Hockey every Tuesday from mid-September to April. Our league didn’t operate last year but we’re targeting Sept 21 to kick off this season.

I played baseball in a 22-plus league until 2017, when I was 43. I miss the hell out of it but I’m sure I’d hurt myself if I went back.

I now golf about once a week, I think I’ll join a club next year so I feel forced to play more.

Immunocompromised, so the gym is out, but I want to join Planet Fitness when things get better. Still feeling wistful that it took this long for women's rec league hockey to come to Nashville.

Right now I do virtual races. 5Ks were something I'd planned to do in 2020 when the weather got warmer and we saw how that worked out. They can be spendy compared to in-person runs, so it has to be a cause I care about or the bling appeals. I also do virtual races with friends. We take photos of our treadmill readouts. That's where I get competitive. With the public races, I'll put ridiculously long times like 168 hours and 15 minutes (a week and fifteen minutes for those of you playing at home.) There are people who might not post their times because they are slow(er than I am) and somebody has to come in last. I don't mind. The bi-monthly medals appeal to my magpie nature.

Krampus XCountry is happening again in December for anyone who might be interested. I'd love to do it in person in the future. Last year's medal is made of wood and will go on my tree this year. I am waiting for the right place to wear my Krampus buff.

I played softball for years. But for some reason a few years ago it started feeling not so fun anymore. Guys on the team took it way too seriously for the relative competition level of the league and one person in particular made it feel like a chore. I'm a solid player but I decided I didn't want to give up my Sunday mornings to get yelled at by a-holes treating mens' rec softball like the MLB postseason.

I love racquetball and have played competitively on the state level. Won one sanctioned tournament and probably would have a couple of more if I wasn't a headcase. I like singles and haven't done much of sports like basketball or softball because while competitive, I don't like the ultra competitive dudes out there that make it a miserable experience. But then the downside with singles is it's just you and your own thinking!

That said, I had gotten pretty good but then needed a hernia surgery in the fall of 2019 and by the time I was totally ready to go again COVID hit. So I probably suck again. There haven't been any local tourneys since COVID and my main racquetball partner quit for good. I'll figure something out, but I do love it!

    Racquetball. Heh.

I had one experience that put me off of it. I had a roommate who played a good bit at his health club, and he talked me into going. I played a good bit of tennis and all my reflexive moves were wrong. The damn racket was a foot or more too short. It was frustrating beyond belief.

It didn't help that he was a former high school QB (we were both in our early twenties) and that he had us on the court in the lobby with a clear back wall with the whole club watching me get demolished.

He had a lot of fun, though.

Our community has an annual competition for people 50 and older called the Oldlympics. There are some 20 events over three weeks from cribbage, blackjack and billiards to golf, tennis, weightlifting and, yes, pickleball.

I usually compete in swimming and track and I’ve won a bunch of medals because there usually aren’t a lot of competitors under 60. I’m now 61 and signed up for track and field — the 50 and 100, 1k walk, free throw shoot and football throw. I passed on the jumps, long and high, and any distances.

I’m not free the day of swimming, where I usually only do the 25 and 50 free. I can swim pretty fast but have a terrible breathing technique so I get gassed quickly.

right there with you. Still play tennis somewhat competitively (in leagues vs. 30somethings). Pickleball can wait til I'm in my 60s.

Tennis does not translate to racquetball at all! If you try and play tennis you will be in a world of trouble, which you figured out. Mostly when I see someone try a tennis swing the ball goes straight into the ground! It's a fast game, great workout, lots of strategy in where to place shots, how to use the walls and where, how hard to hit, etc.
