Thanks. I appreciate your thoughts. I don't think I'll be moving to Duluth, though.:) Just not a place I've thought about at all -- although it would probably be great in terms of me being able to put to use my fetish for jackets, coats and vests, which is stupid (not that that keeps me from looking, shopping and buying) in California, where you hardly ever even need long-sleeved T-shirts.

I am actually fortunate, and can't complain much. My condo is paid off, so I really can't go too wrong, no matter what I decide to do, I don't think. But it is the only source of potential big money that I have, so this is something that's been on my mind and under consideration much more lately than it ever was in years past. I'd like to make a good decision, and not be stupid about something that could be a good move for the future if I do want to make a change (as I'm sometimes wont to do).

Luckily, I am also fortunate in that I can very likely transfer almost anywhere, and take a job with me, through Walmart, again if that's what I decide I want to do. Really, it's a tough decision, though, if you're not absolutely sure, and not necessarily someone who is always and only motivated by money. But I'm blessed. I know things will work out as they should, how ever I go.

The insane CA prices are because people love it here are there are good job opportunities. Drought is a concern but it’s balanced out before and we hope it will again. If so, it’s a great weather climate.

Sounds very much like the situation in Northern California in the 1990s and 2000s during the dot-com boom, when cities like Tracy, Patterson, Los Banos and Gustine had an influx of Silicon Valley workers looking for housing.

One of the reasons I had no problem moving away from California was that despite the amazing entertainment possibilities, traffic made it such a hassle to "unwind" whether it is to go for a hike, see a show or whatever. Remote working though must be a boon for the urban office workers - find a decently priced place in the Sierra foothills, the North or Central Coast.

Plus, I found that where I live now has a very similar vibe to the Bay Area I grew up in. And I can be on a river in my canoe within 30 minutes, pretty much whenever and whereever. But I would say that housing prices up here in comparison to wages is probably worse than the Bay Area - renting or buying it doesn't matter.

I'm always surprised how well those Woodward books sell. The juiciest bits always come out in the press and save you $35 and a couple weeks of reading. I'm curious who came out "good" in the book though, since that is always the person who provided much of the spicy narrative.

Honest question - who would you rather be in a Woodward book - Deep Throat or the focus of the book. If you are Deep Throat you are a "hero" but if you are the "focus" you're a national leader. I'd really like to see Woodward tackle Congress. The Senate and the House must have a TON of gossip and craziness to write about, the cover-ups, the affairs, the stupidity...

What should concern you is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs felt it necessary to tell our adversaries “yeah we know - he’s crazy. But we haven’t gone crazy.”

I interviewed for a job in Los Angeles in 1993. It would have been 30% more money.

The downsides were that the job was located near downtown. I had a wife and infant son. So to find a decent school system and a decent house that I could afford would have required a considerable commute. When I stayed in California I had a friend in Redondo so I stayed in that area. I went in and saw a realtor and she told me that a 1300 square foot, 1960 era house with three bedrooms and two baths would cost 300k plus in southeast Torrance. It would have been a hell of a a stretch but I thought I could buy the house.

I walked around the neighborhood and it the weather was sunny and beautiful. I decided that if I got the job I would move, the hell with the higher housing costs and the commute. California here we come. I did not get the job.

But I recently was in Los Angeles. I checked the neighborhood on Zillow. The houses in that neighborhood are now running one million dollars. Even adjusting for wage inflation there is no way in hell I can get into the housing market.
