Every Democratic politician alive has selectively criticized both - and often rightly so. Are they playing from the autocrat’s playbook?

Not every tweet from a progressive person who critiques Trump is a good one.

As an early comment in that thread put it, "So much for the "Advice of Counsel" defense."

    https://thehill.com/news/ap/ap-business/disney-government-dissolution-bill-signed-by-desantis/

So Gov. Ron DeSantis officially signed a bill designed to punish Disney for its opposition to "Don't Say Gay," which is funny because Disney really tried to get away with staying out of this fight entirely.

I'm not even going to start digging into this except to point out that there are reports that it won't actually hurt Disney's bottom line at all. In effect, it will just push a larger burden onto taxpayers in Florida. I haven't seen any report that clearly defines the impact of this law, but I sincerely doubt the corporation or its higher-ups will be the ones who lose.

This seems like a perfect example of what people get from DeSantis, actions that are shortsighted and stupid. I don't think anybody in the Florida government thought this through. They just thought they could punish the big, mean corporation. In addition to possibly failing in that goal and possibly hurting the finances of homeowners in their own state, is it really intelligent to pick a fight with a company with that much political influence? Disney entered the "Don't Say Gay" issue reluctantly. That reluctance to take on Republicans could fade very quickly, right?

To be fair, I don't think the corporate types at Disney care about the issue at all, though obviously some of the talent working for the company does. They care about their image and how it affects their bottom line. Mess with either of those things and I'm guessing they will defend themselves.

Disney actually gets a tax break from this law because some of things they handled within the special district now must be born by the county. Ironically, that means part of this tax bill will be paid by Universal and Seaworld. Disney loses because many of the things it just approves itself to do must go through the country now. On the latter, Disney is constantly under construction. There are miles and miles of roads which are well kept. All of that will lag now, because the county permitting system is achingly slow.

This is one scary thread. There is nothing you can do to defend yourself from this other than not to have devices active. No matter what you do with your security settings, if your phone has power, it is pinging your location, and by "has power" I mean has a battery inside that is not stone dead. Turning it off does not stop it. Our government pays to have access to this.

I wish Dems in blue states would go on the offensive and say that because of DeSantis’ precedent, they’ll now strip churches of their tax exempt status because they don’t like their views on abortion and LGBTQs.

It probably would get tossed out in court on First Amendment grounds, but at least the Dems would be playing the GQP’s game for once.

Yeah, but that's a losing game. You'd have every preacher in the pulpit raging against the blue devils, stoking their congregation to pull the R straight ticket lever.

They’ve been doing that for years anyways. Plus, if the Dems played their cards right, they should just repeat that they’re following DeSantis’ example.
