Holy crap. That is just phenomenal. He did all that live?

I'd love to get a hold of a copy that I could actually read, since these are so small.

I love that too. Good old-time newsroomin'. ;)

Our local big paper used to do something different on Sunday gamers for the college football team. Almost every Sunday, they would have a three-, four-photo sequence of a big play, and they'd paste word bubbles onto the pictures, like "TOUCHDOWN!!" or "BIG PLAY!!!"

Uh ... I like the Dyergram better.

    Yep.

Of course, almost all games were played in the afternoon in those days.

Today's prime-time kickoff environment isn't very friendly toward truly creative enterprises.

Just write some running, top it when the game's over and call it a success.  :'(

We've begun doing something else on Monday night football gamers with one of our local teams, and it seems to work well.

While we have our NFL guy at the game, we have another one of our writers -- one with a flair for this sort of thing -- produce a quarter-by-quarter rail. Not play-by-play, but bylined commentary on what transpired in each quarter. We give him a 12-pica by 11" hole to fit it into, and he has it to us as the final seconds tick off.

Except I wouldn't say that because that's not what I meant.

Prettying up page numbers is a waste of time. If we're going to come on here and cry about being overworked and underpaid, then I think we should be spending time on what's important. The page number ain't it.

    DP:

    Maybe you're overworked and underpaid.

I happen to be underworked and overpaid.

    And loving it. ;D

    Witness, brother BT.  ;D

Held my tongue for a while, DP, but here is: If "civil" to you means "liquid praise," then, yeah, that's all we want you to offer. Liquid praise for all. Leave criticism to those who can deliver it with professionalism.

Now, please, back to the pages.

I do like this. Clean, airy, and yet a strong hierarchy. Striking consistency on info boxes. Even willing to forgive the bumping heads at the bottom. ;)

That is a particularly offensive case of bumping headlines. Didn't even bother with a rule.

Use the breakout to separate them, shorten the hed. Ain't hard.

It looks like there's a light gray rule between the heads, LJB.

I really like that page. It's simple and clean. And I love the info-box style.

The scary thing, at least to me, is the similarities of that section and our section. We use almost the same hed fonts, headers and the info boxes are similar.

We just went through a redesign here... wonder if this was some inspiration.

I like the airy-ness of the page.

Unlike shottie, I don't mind the bumping heds cause of the difference in size.

I'm guessing those are like nut grafs as led ins. Don't know if I like that, but it works with the overall page

That's an interesting page. A few too many logo-discs, though. There's four of them and I don't like that many at once.

Bumping heads: My paper uses them on inside pages, but they always use a significant change in point size and/or font. I'm not a fan of them, but what's an underling to do?
