In keeping with general Justice Department practice, Garland has refrained from revealing any details about the investigation, including why the Justice Department believed it was necessary to pursue a search warrant after the subpoena and what FBI agents were seeking this week.

People familiar with the probe have said it is focused on whether the former president or his aides withheld classified or other government material that should have been returned to government custody earlier.

Pressure had been building for Garland to say something so that the public understands why the Justice Department — and a federal magistrate judge — believed the extraordinary step of executing a search warrant at the home of a former president was necessary. But Garland in general has refused to discuss ongoing investigations.​
