Ricky Fowler drops his swing coach.

Most overrated golfer out there, never won a major.

    But burnt orange.

For some unknown reason, that guy just gets under my skin. And he's from my old neck of the woods, the Temescal Canyon area of the I.E. so I should root for him but, nah.

But he did birdie 17 three times on Sunday to win a Players, which amazes me as someone who's put more balls into that water hazard than I'd like to admit.

Also very close to going to LIV but didn't, which is fairly remarkable given how he's lost his game. Would have been a very easy and lucrative parachute.

Fowler has made more than $41 mil in his career, not counting another zillion endorsing crap. He doesn't need a parachute. None of them do. They do it for ego reasons and from what I can tell, his ego isn't an issue, which is one of the things that made him so likeable. Even if he stays "bad" at golf, he's only 33, so he's got another decade or so of making at least a mil per year. And he'll be good enough to at least do that.

You never know. Brandt Snedeker has won $40 million lifetime and made $350k this year, though he's older. I give Rickie plenty of credit for whacking his caddie and coach and trying to get back to his 27-year-old self, because it's entirely possible that he's toast as an exempt Tour player by age 40. Or sooner.

And don't be so sure that the parachute wasn't quite necessary for some guys. Henrik Stenson lost fortunes in Ponzi schemes like Stanford Financial.

Golf update: At the range met Carole Charbonnier, former LPGA pro from Zambia via Switzerland, who in 1983 finished in the top 10 at the Dinah Shore. She had rheumatic fever as a child and, with her parents encouraging outdoor activities, found golf on her own. She teaches here now and made a suggestion to fix a flaw in my driver swing in one minute. I then went out and strung three good shots together, including two 3 woods, to birdie a 525-yard par 5, the longest hole on my regular course. Had two other pars for my best round this summer.

Absolute classic. The show was called "Golf Your Way," shown on a local channel in Indy and filmed just south of town (interestingly at a course called The Legends of Indiana, owned by Ted Bishop, the disgraced former PGA of America president). There's a longer tape of outtakes, probably 15 minutes, I saw it about 25 years ago on a grainy VHS (like above). The guy who had it was convinced it was a rare artifact, but there were probably a thousand of those tapes circulating around Indiana back in the day.

The other man in the video was IU's longtime golf coach, Sam Carmichael. Absolute prince of a guy who would never curse, but in one of the outtakes he did -- Knight said something like "Sam, can I ever get out of the goddamned bunker?" and Sam shot back "No, I don't suppose you'll ever get out of the goddamned bunker" and Knight about fell over laughing.

Instead of a sand wedge, he should have used a chair.

Welp, just signed up for Rules school again, next March. At least it's a home game for me. Hoping to do better than the 62 I made the first time I made the test. There will be some minor Rules updates coming for 2023 as we go through another four-year cycle but I don't expect many sweeping changes, mainly just folding some clarifications from recent years into the main rules text.
