I remember working off the clock to cover training camp and home games for the Jaguars (the Jaguars!) in hopes it would help me escape small-paper hell. It did not, and that was a lot of hours away from home in the early years of my marriage.

Just think, if I had spent that time at home, I might have realized sooner that my wife was a gaslighting bitch and divorced before having my kids, who are the most fulfilling part of my life. So thank you Fred Taylor, Mark Brunell and Tom Coughlin for indirectly making me a father.

Outing alert: @dixiehack is … me?

(except my extra uncredited hours were spent designing special sections and learning the technology, which led to my current career, but also simultaneously preserved and ruined a toxic relationship from which some great kids were born.)

My senior year of high school, I had a crush on a blonde girl named Britt. Her dad was a minister. She was cute and we were in our school play together. There was a little bit of flirting, but being my socially awkward self, I was unable to seal the deal.

Years later, I found her on Facebook and we were briefly Facebook friends before she nuked her profile. She’s back now, but limits her friends. The years were extreme unkind to her. In college, she developed major physical and mental health problems. She gained about 200 pounds, and at one point, showed online pictures of scars on her arms and legs where she had been cutting herself.

I feel sorry for her. In high school, she was really nice and seemed to have a lot going for her. You never know.

    A couple of things ...

    1. From a practical, life-long sense, the typing class I took in 9th grade might have been the most useful class I ever took.

    2. On hours/vacation ... yeah, that was reason No. 1 why I got out of the business. Well, that and the low pay. Coupled together I became extremely resentful toward my newspaper job. Where I am now, if I find a dead spot in the schedule, I try to take PTO to recharge. I have plenty of it. I took two days before and two days after Labor Day just for a mental break and it's made my work better since I've returned. Any manager worth her/his salt will recognize burnout in an employee and encourage mental health breaks.

I do, too. There are at least a couple of counselors around here who keep a store of gifts for students who come into their offices with the good news that they've been accepted somewhere. Even my clients were never told such nonsense. She's a fabulist and a bad one at that.

No, it's not a female problem, it's a Brittny problem. BTW, her screen name says it all: BrittBrat? Really?

Being old has its advantages, now go get my Fresca, zygote.

Has anyone followed up on said guidance counsellor for a rebuttal?

Said guidance counselor should say "Bless Your Heart" – if anything at all – and move on. Why should the guidance counselor stoop down to her already-low level?

There's nothing comparable to getting out the paper, especially for big events like Friday night football or election night, but one thing I love about my current situation is, when my shift ends, even if the lines are incredibly long, I punch out at head out the door.
