I don’t know why the IRS wouldn’t pursue a tax fraud case if the state of New York has done a lot of the work for them

There is a major difference between Letitia James standing in front of a camera and making accusations. ... and someone walking into court and winning this kind of criminal case. Her office hasn't done that much work to unearth anything that wasn't being reported in the New York Times in that big expose it did. She's got what might be a fairly weak civil case (never mind a criminal indictment), but her threshold for a civil case is only a “preponderance of the evidence.” When you walk into court with a criminal fraud case, you need to be able to prove criminal intent to defraud beyond a reasonable doubt, and real estate valuations are slippery by their very nature -- a huge building isn't marked to market the way a stock is. The Manhattan DA's office did a criminal investigation that covered all of this. ... and declined to prosecute, likely for that very reason. It's likely why the IRS has audited Trumps' returns over these things ad infinitum and can't do much about it. The IRS can pursue a tax fraud case -- they do it every day. But usually it is against people who won't fight back (who they can bully). They have no desire to walk into court with a weak case and degrade their authority to scare people. ... by losing. And these cases are not slam dunk winners.

Trump looks like he's sitting on some sort of suitcase here:

Update from your Georgia political correspondent with roughly six weeks to go:

    1. The most recent poll I saw shows voters have already made up their minds. Fewer than 6 percent are undecided on either the governor or senator.

    2. Kemp should breeze. Abrams isn't making headway with the abortion issue. And Kemp's decision to rebuff Trump paid off when he crushed Perdue in the primary. He's the incumbent. Unlike DeSantis or Abbott, he's done nothing to stir up fervor against him. The Demos can't even tie any of the Orange Cheeto's craziness to him.

    3. On the other hand, Warnock holds about a 2 percent lead in the polls against Walker, which is definitely within the margin of error. The GOP has tried to pin Warnock on inflation, his vote on spending, and now "giving recovery checks to the Boston bomber." On the other hand, Walker's being touted as the "outsider." (Yeah, like "never seen a flush toilet" outsider, I guess.) The Demos have pounded him on anti-abortion, his multiple false claims and the military non-profit from which he profited.

It doesn't seem like any of those issues really matter at this point, unless gas prices and shopping items go through the roof again, or the GOP continues to press the abortion hot button. The battle lines were drawn months ago. It's really going to come down to which side can keep voters involved until November.

If gas remains around $3 and the Fed doesn't tank the market, Democrats still have a puncher's chance. The higher the turnout, the better Warnock's chances will be. If centrists stay home because neither candidate is appealing, the redneck counties may outdraw the bluer metros.

"This guy is just STUPID" would seem to be the best play.

You'd think so, but nothing actually involved in making Georgia better is in the discussion. For all the talk about Biden hiding in the basement, Walker is the least visible candidate I've never seen.

Still can't believe people put stock in political polling.
