Sounds like the AD was leading people to believe candidates like Tom Herman and Dan Mullen were real possibilities while keeping the search hidden, pissing off a lot of your people and the players along the way. And the best he could do with 5 months is this guy.

Bill Clark has been actively interviewing, so the resignation smells like part bad back, part bad AD.

The Clark thing is tricky. He did not get along with the AD, but also the timing of his resignation was an end around to get his favored assistant the interim job and a 12-game tryout despite having been a thoroughgoing mediocrity. A lot of UAB people who otherwise adored Clark were really put off by that move.

What I don’t get is why they would not have at least interviewed Cadillac Williams and made it known. Four games as an interim SEC coach isn’t much to go by, but it certainly trumps four years of high school ball. And the publicity would have absolutely lit this state on fire. Even Bama fans have been notably appreciative of the chicken salad he made in a month on the Plains.

That program can't get out of its way.

Not hiring Mickey Joseph for the permanent gig is that program's first big win in a while.

I keep thinking of Cadillac Williams as some younger guy with little coaching experience… and then I see that he’s 40. It’s as if we went straight from 2009 to 2020.

Word I got was that they talked to Herman and he turned it down flat. I was hearing Skip Holtz (till the fans/boosters had a shitfit) and Tyson Helton, (HC at Western Kentucky) was the likely pick until the story broke. It was supposed to be announced on Friday, as Dilfer's team plays for a championship tomorrow.

First I have heard of Clark interviewing. His wife was asked on FB if they were going to the Bahamas for the bowl and she said they were leaving for Hawaii that day. We read that as he was taking the year off to heal and looking next season. I've seen his name in generic candidate lists, but no firm stories on him pushing for a job. Who was he talking to?

His back problems were fully legit though. No one has spinal fusion surgery as a smoke screen. It's why he quit playing and started coaching very young. He was to the point that the coordinators were running the practices and he was confined to a golf cart.

I have no idea, but I'd think South Florida might be -- or might have been -- a good destination for him. They need somebody who can bring a program back from the dead, and he qualifies twice over.

As to Clark leaving, we knew he was likely to move on. No real problem with that. The AD has undercut him repeatedly, and the University Pres is the same one who wielded the knife for the UA BoT. Plus more money and better conferences is how these guys keep score.

No matter how often it was claimed that his back issues drove his retirement, that smelled fishy from day one. He got his OC the interim job. Nice guy, players coach... and an unimaginative play caller. Poor to nonexistent halftime adjustments, bad clock management and two minute drill. The fans already did not like him going in, but thought that maybe he was providing the offense Clark preferred. No real change once he was HC. He got unlucky when the starting QB was out for three games, all losses. There was some fan agitation to keep him but the writing was on the wall.

Dilfer's involvement with the Elite 11 camp and record at Lipscomb gives us some hope. We're praying it works and someone hires our idiot AD away. This is his big hire, such as it is.

I'll be interested in the contract. No one knows how much the UA BoT would allow us to offer. Anything over 600k has to be approved by them. I read that Dilfer was paid 1.5m where he was, can't speak to how accurate that is.

Maybe. I'm not sure whether he would take that job and start coaching against UAB in our first season in the AAC. Depends on what offers he got, I suppose.
