I hate when people are so invested in arguing in absolutes and demonizing, that they then put words into someone else's mouth. He didn't say He "strongly disagree" that LGBTQ people are real people with real feelings." Come on. He was saying he strongly disagrees with someone "forcing your pronouns upon others when they didn't ask, and implicitly ostracizing those who don't." There was no ambiguity in what he was saying. There was plenty enough to work with there, so the dishonest tweet really lost me.

This person could have just left it at, "This has no bearing on you or your life. If you give that much of a shit about what someone wants to be called -- where you had to try to tweak people with that tweet -- you are an asshole."

Also, that "If you meet someone and they tell you their name is Bob, but you decide that you're only going to refer to them as Steve. ..." is just too perfectly framed. The opposite perfectly framed statement from someone like Musk would be, "If someone tells me that a blue shirt is green and I keep insisting it's blue. ... and then they try to cancel me, as a result. ..."

When I’m tempted to utter some sort of a humblebrag about never signing up for Twitter, I try to remember that just makes me appear to be an archaic smug geezer.

I get the same feeling when I have conversations about pronouns with my college-age son. I used to catch myself ranting, “When I was on the copy desk, I lost count of all the ‘theys’ I changed to ‘his or her’ to make them agree with the sentence structure.”

    “Things change, Dad”

    “But, AP Style!”

“Like I said, Dad. Things change. Oh, and also, kids are occasionally going to wander into your yard. That’s what kids do. Stop yelling at them!”

Kids going onto my lawn has never been a thing. Golf balls, on the other hand . . .

    Yep.

When I was a kid, my mom, the special Ed teacher, wouldn’t think twice about using the words “retarded” or “idiot savant” to describe her students.

My only hope is that my kids never look at me with the same horror with which I looked at her.

I can already see it with my 9-year-old, when I come across him watching something on TikTok and he sees the curmudgeonly look on my face.

That said, I’d still rather slam my nuts in a car door than spend more than a nanosecond on “Twitter.”

Don’t rich people have anything better to do than troll? I feel like my old teacher in grade school who would catch me day dreaming and say, “if you have nothing to do I can find you something.”
