At this point, I'd be surprised. I was just a guy yelling "Heeeeeeere come the IceCaps!" at the start of the game. That'd be fun but I'm certain nobody remembers who that guy was 31 years ago. They hired WRAL's Mark Roberts, who did morning traffic, after I left.

I do hope they invite Rick Barkovich, Lyle Wildgoose, Smokey Reddick and some of the other early-on players who were the trailblazers. I think Jimmy Powers actually stayed in Raleigh and built up the youth program there.

My friend worked as a mortgage broker for a company in Anaheim back when the Ducks were starting up. He got season tickets and sat in the front row next to the goal judge. They talked and my friend asked the guy how he got the job. He said he walked into the office and asked for a job. They asked about his qualifications. He said, "I like hockey." So they hired him and made him a goal judge.

Yeah, I remember when the Houston Apollos were added to the Central Hockey League and the roster was filled with French Canadians, as the team was the affiliate of Montreal. That had to have been a culture shock on both ends.

The Western Hockey League, particularly the San Francisco Seals-L.A. Blades rivalry, was pretty fierce and certainly had core fans before the Kings and Oakland Seals were added in the 1967 expanson.

The Canadians who played for Raleigh absolutely loved the town, the weather and the free golf. All they had to do was mention they played for the IceCaps and the courses around the Triangle were more than happy to let them play at no charge. To guys from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, having no snow on the ground in January was a huge perk.

Ovechkin with the hat trick to get to 800 last night. Two more to pass Gordie Howe and then the race is on...

Terrific story i.e. the IceCaps. A fellow by the name of Mark (or maybe it was Mike) Miller did the team's radio for a bit, thought that might have been after you left.

Funny you should mention the old CHL. I have a friend who played for the Houston Apollos. Not only was he a Canadiens farmhand, but also a Montreal native. Later after being traded to Pittsburgh, he spent time with the Penguins CHL club in ... get this ... Amarillo, Texas. He's loves telling old war stories and his time in the Lone Star State is no exception.

It was cool to feel the excitement building, and the Chicago fans showed a lot of class.

The way he's going he's going to be within striking distance at the end of next year.

For a second, I thought that was the number of shots on goal the Flames got against the Ducks in the second period Friday night.
    Actually, it was 23-1.

The Penguins really are maddening when things are going badly. They led the Red Wings, 4-0, after the first period. Now they are trying to hang on to send it to overtime at 4-4.

Edit: Of course, they lost on a goal in transition in overtime, as they have done repeatedly this season.
