Sports Production Editor - The Villages Daily Sun

The Villages Daily Sun, Florida’s largest daily printed newspaper (and the only newspaper in America's largest 25 that is still growing), is seeking a sports junkie to visually elevate our award-winning sports section, which is a regular APSE Top 10 sports section and a three-time finalist for SND World's Best Designed Newspaper.

We’re looking for a visual editor with experience making smart content decisions under deadline pressure. We have a strong track record of journalistic excellence, so you must be comfortable contributing to a rigorous editing process.

Ours is a newsroom that values experimental thinking and the power of unconventional storytelling. We offer a generous newshole, impeccable print quality, modern tech resources (fully Mac and Creative Suite shop) and leadership support that enable good visual journalists to become truly great.

We're a print-centric market with a brand new printing plant, the first to be built in America in the last decade. This means we still enjoy late publication deadlines for sporting events in all time zones. It also means you can focus on strong visual storytelling with a digital distraction, and that you can experience the joy of creative collaboration in a high-octane newsroom instead of the vacuum of remote workflow.

We’re a 90-mile drive to the beach, Orlando’s theme parks and the historic neighborhoods of Gainesville and St. Augustine. We offer competitive pay, excellent benefits and access to a highly regarded charter school system in one of the state’s most idyllic settings.

Apply by sending a letter of introduction and resume to the attention of Associate Editor Nick Feely at nick.feely@thevillagesmedia.com. And then fill out the basic HR application for the “production editor” position at the link below.

This has been up for grabs quite a few times, has it not?

We have been through the ringer a few times with the position. We originally filled it internally, then that person got promoted to a new position. Then we filled it again, and now that person, who has been great, is moving for personal reasons. So now, it's open once again. If anyone has any questions about the spot, please feel free to reach out at the email in the original listing and I'm happy to chat about it.

Nothing against this paper, but what an indictment of our society that this is in the top 25 re: print circ.

I get that completely, and yet, I can see it. The demographics of the readership would be extremely telling, I imagine.

Demographics for sure. The OP can confirm but I don't think you're allowed to live full-time in The Villages if you're under 55, and the newspaper subscription may even be included in the neighborhood fees and such (again I could be wrong).

Oh I get that, just saying… our business has completely collapsed in the last 15 years, and that fact underscores it.

You can live there if one person in the home is 55. But there are all kinds of surrounding communities on the edge of The Villages. A monster high school opens in the fall, and the parents of those kids aren't 55.

The newspaper subscription is not included in the paid amenity fees to use the golf courses, pickleball courts or other facilites. The circulation is all paid customers acting on their own will. Demographics certainly help our circulation numbers, there's no denying that, but I also believe we do a good job of knowing our audience and capitalizing on that advantage with a product they can't live without if they want to enjoy the lifestyle.

IIRC, the subscription price is something like $84/year (about 23 cents a day). Residents are really getting a good deal.
