If the American "left" had moved as far left as the American right has moved right, I'd agree.

That has not been the case.

The GOP now centers what used to be its John Birch fringe. Trump is part of that, certainly, but not the entirety of it.

If both parties were engaging in that sort of extremism there'd be a lot more Communists in the statehouses and in Congress.

The Wisconsin vote was big - however it plays out. Clearly the GOP isn't of the mind that they need to dial back their policies or start focusing on "kitchen table" issues - which doesn't bode well for them next fall. They'll simply use whatever levers of government they control to exert their will on things.

I'm not talking about ideologies. I am talking about institutions and processes. and what people did to those processes to take shortcuts, in order to get the things they wanted over time. ... and the damage that did to the norms that kept things in check. I believe that the extremism you are talking about grew out of a lot of things over decades that people who now complain about the extremism were justifying along the way. But the extremism didn't just pop up out of nowhere and become OK. It was a slow erosion, pushing limits little by little. ... and no, it was not a good versus evil story. It was people of a lot of stripes doing that slow damage that is culminating in more extremism.

Even if I was talking about ideologies. ... the whole conservative, liberal, right, left thing has become utterly meaningless the way people use the terms. I see a lot of opportunism cloaked in populist nonsense. I see very few actual ideologues able to get elected anymore.

None of that surprises me at all. Not trying to be a jerk toward you, Jake, but that coverage just seems to follow the same old pattern I remember from three or four years ago.

Are you saying every Democrat ISN'T a commie!?! Because I've been told they all are. Or socialists. One or the other.

Don't forget pedophiles and groomers. But that's not dangerous at all.

"Why an ex-President indicted in New York, and wins by Democrats for Chicago Mayor and Wisconsin Supreme Court -- all in one day -- are bad for Biden."
