I think with a non-military 2-year service option, we'd get a lot more buy-in from rich folks and celebrities and more participation from everyone.

 

Maybe. I mean, to be clear, there are children of rich people who serve in the military. Others who serve as missionaries.

Point is, America's not really in the mood for anything ordinary people have to do that rich, famous and talented people don't have to do. My sense - and I suspect you have this, too - that many Americans have grown really, really fatigued by expecting to do more with and for less while the "Succession" set of the universe walks between the raindrops. It's the catalyst behind a lot of anger in the country.

 

If by fatigue you mean cult of 80 million then sure, fatigued.
