We took my grandmother’s car keys away once she started down that road. I think that’s what the gun nuts really fear, losing their guns.

One of the hardest things my brother and I had to do was convince our dad to quit driving. He totaled his car (no injuries) so we thought that was it since he no longer had a car. But no. His drivers license expired. That was it. No. He passed the written test. For the driving test, he borrowed his gardener's car. Failed. On a re-test, he called Enterprise -- "We pick you up" -- and rented one. He was very crafty and determined. He sweet-talked the DMV lady until my brother cornered her and scolded her. "There is no way in the world this man should be behind the wheel. Do not allow this."

I got lucky on that count because my dad quit driving the last 4-5 years he was alive. I think he got afraid.

I wonder if he has a wife. Children. Grandchildren. Some responsible party who should have taken away that gun.

That he's living at home would seem to indicate he's not completely incompetent.

But the dementia paranoia Inky describes is very real.

Christ, the thought of a nation full of senile racist gun owners is chilling.

You'd like to believe this terrible moment provides an opportunity for a national discussion about taking away Grandpa's gat before he kills someone.

    But it won't.

Our society cannot get a US Senator in the throes of dementia to resign, so good luck getting the grandpas to give up their Glocks.

Damnedest thing about that disease is for X hours per day, they are fine and functioning normally. That’s why they don’t think anything is wrong.
