I mean, before Trump (and to a lesser degree before the second Iraq war), Hillsdale was kind of the Notre Dame for movement conservatives, the people who read Buckley and understood some of it but didn't have the means to get into an Ivy. But because so much of their ethos was built around opposing liberalism and government in all its forms, when the standard-bearer for that became an unserious man who just wanted to hump the flag and own the libs, that's kind of what it devolved into. It wasn't always a secular Bible college, though.

This "indoctrination" bullshit is the culmination of 50 years of Republican orthodoxy that any public investment that does not benefit me directly constitutes waste. Public education constitutes a significant expenditure of tax dollars over which a lot of Johnnys and Janes go in one person and out a much more liberal person. Is that because of the education or the culture? I'd argue you could institute a Desantis-friendly readin', right-wing and 'rithmetic curriculum that you would not get significantly different result by virtue of the fact that exposure to people from different walks of life is the secret sauce, not some dipshit PoliSci prof. Ironically, had they kept doing pandemic school, they might have been able to mitigate that effect by providing the education without the culture. But angry white folks have a conniption because they see tax dollars go in and liberals come out, even if their reasoning is a giant "post hoc ergo propter hoc," a term their kids might have learned at UF but they certainly didn't learn on their two-bit farm.
