FAFO: Journalism Edition

Two things about flying out of Hartsfield Jackson Jefferson Washington Lincoln Aiport:

1. Good: Because it's a hub, you can fly non-stop nearly anywhere in the world.
2. Bad: There's a very good chance you could be missing your SkyMiles/exit row seat/suitcase/laptop/cellphone/car/the clothes you're wearing/birthdays and anniversaries by the time you get to where you're going. And don't even think about the return flight. It's already delayed until hell freezes over.

I've been on exactly two flights since 2012. We went to Gwen's brother's funeral in the Bay Area last summer and back home. That makes my streak of on-time service flying to and from Atlanta since 2001 ... two.

 

No, he got fired because he tried to say, "Hitler wasn't really that bad!"

 

Reminded of the joke my stepmother told me once: In the South, when you die and go to heaven, you have to go to Atlanta first.

 

I thought it was the devil who went down to Georgia.

 

When I lived down that way, you couldn't fly anywhere without flying through Atlanta, Dallas, or Memphis, depending on your carrier. I don't think I've flown via Atlanta in at least 10 years, but I certainly don't miss it.

 

The Devil went down to Georgia, played the fiddle with a whole band of demons backing him … and yet he lost to one kid.

There was a time where I would have chewed off fingers to work at the Seattle Times. I applied for their two-year residency program in college and exhausted every avenue I knew of to sweet talk editors who worked there, traveling to St. Louis for a Poynter workshop one April for the sole intent of doing just that.

So, to watch this dude light himself on fire at warp speed has been interesting to say the least.

 

Why did you so much want to work at the Seattle Times?

 

I wanted as far away from Pittsburgh as possible.
