1807 – Thomas Bowdler Publishes ‘The Family Shakespeare’
Nearly 200 years after Shakespeare’s death, Thomas Bowdler published a family-friendly version of his works that eliminated words “which cannot with propriety be allowed in a family.” Bowdler’s name became synonymous with censorship. To bowdlerize means to remove material deemed offensive or improper from a text.

What do you call a person who farts in a closet?

Any critique or less-than-rose-colored observation of the new left tend to be framed as a troll, a bait, insincere, etc, etc.

It’s a rhetorical sleight of hand.

As is ignoring the cultural right, which in the current moment seems to be doing the actual censoring, bowdlerizing of history and banning of books.

Truth is, this thread isn't really about restrictions to thought or speech.

Like the hysteria surrounding 'political correctness' before it, this is about a certain demographic losing access to its cheapest punchlines.

Having lost it, like night follows day, comes the assertion that the entire culture is collapsing.

It’s the Neo-Nazis on the right who will legislate against films that offend people and things done solely for shock value.

This isn't it no matter how many times you try to smartly say it.

I'm sure you think it isn't. Or wasn't.

But the point at which you introduced Spike Lee - and asked why he can say things you can't ; or why he can say those things without condemnation from the board; or declared everyone here a hypocrite for taking context into account - that argument changed.

"Why can't I say this thing?" became the Rewriting, Washing, and Scrubbing of the entire American Culture.

Hypocrite referred to one poster who posted a derogatory term against Asians 10 times in recent years then shit on my rug for doing the same thing.

Can you show me the exact language where I asked why he can and I can't?

The cultural right has been criticized and analyzed down to the atom. As it well it should be. But it has been.
