Pizza delivery is a dogshit way to make a living, but a pretty good way to get a feel for the makeup of your town or neighborhood.

When I was delivering late last decade, I would sometimes deliver to low end trailer parks with Hispanics living in squalor the way you describe. But I would also deliver to quite a few middle to upper-middle class subdivisions where there was a Hispanic family living comfortably and a shiny new $60k 3/4-ton truck was sitting in the driveway next to the tool trailer.

I wouldn’t be so quick to generalize.

 

I mean, you’re right, by all accounts they should want nothing to do with the GOP and it’s hard to understand the why anyone would go with the GOP.

But

Religion and family.
Obama and by extension Democrats was seen as a great deporter.
There is a sizable patriarchal attitude that mirrors US conservatives
There’s an attitude by immigrants of “I got mine, so screw you.”
Educated Hispanics sometimes look down on those who aren’t.
There is a class hierarchy that plays into it.
No one group is a monolith. Some are going to vote against their interests.
A good number fled gangs and cartels, so they appreciate strong stances in law and order.

And then sometimes it doesn’t make much sense.

 

Yes, I might share more from the local scene, but then I'd be generalizing more.

 

My coworkers are second and third generation in the US who have nice paying jobs and don’t speak Spanish.
They aren’t hardcore Trumpers, but they are certainly anti Biden.

 

Latinos have traditionally been fairly conservative voters - religious law and order types who could be fairly resentful of undocumented immigrants.

Then Trump labeled them as rapists and murderers and one of his top aides tried to talk him into bombing Mexican border towns. The modern Republican Party blames Mexicans for virtually everything.

In the long game it was really stupid politically. They still get some Latino votes but nothing like they would without making Hispanics public enemy number one.

Except the Trumpist Party has abandoned conservative values in favor of whatever Trump wants at the moment.

The point is that calling someone by their preferred name harms no one, regardless of one’s sex or gender. And yet Republicans are the ones making it a political issue. It’s only fair to point out Republicans’ own hypocrisy.
