They were defending 4th and 25.

Problem is, it was 4th and 31.

But if those VIPs made some sizable donations afterward, it's a win for Mizzou.
I think it sometimes gets lost in the shuffle that a big bowl trip is akin to a marketing expense for some schools. Of course, there are others like UConn's infamous Fiesta Bowl debacle where it's a boondoggle that torpedoes the athletic department for a generation.

The loneliest place in America today is the upper deck of a NY6 bowl game

It was 96 years ago today that Alabama played in its second consecutive Rose Bowl, tying Stanford. For their return trip to California, Alabama players were each gifted a suitcase from Rosenberger’s Birmingham Trunk. (The son of the owner was a team manager.) Attached to each was a good luck charm in the shape of the company’s mascot - a red elephant.

EDIT: 97 years ago. First math flub of the new year.

Man, the ending of that LSU-Wisc game....ugh. It's not like LSU came in with an all-out blitz on any of them, or the Oline was outnumbered. QB didn't seem to know what to do with the football.

Willis McGahee did before getting injured against Ohio State.

Deshaun Watson played a whole season with one, I believe.

And if you truly are risking 10s of millions of dollars to play . . . does a (still somewhat mythical) national title really mitigate that risk?

I realize his kid already got chloroformed, but when does Papa Ferentz get held responsible for this pathetic offense? There is no more Big 10 West to hide in.

My mistake. It was a Miami bowl game, but the guy opting out was Oklahoma State wideout Tylan Wallace.
