The way this is going, wouldn't be surprising to see all the beat writers axed in favor of more features and commentary. Disappointing, yes, but it wouldn't be surprising.

Props to those leaving with classy statements on the way out. Not easy to do under circumstances that make zero sense.

Also, all of the layoffs across the board are not good for the state of the industry as a whole.

He's high up in the guild. Guild members can be particularly vulnerable when this stuff happens. Imaginary infractions and looking at someone the wrong way gets you into HR pretty quickly.

Wow, that one-day strike really had Patrick Soon shivering in his boots.

    Updated from Meg James' story:

Senior editors were part of the purge, including Washington bureau chief Kimbriell Kelly, deputy Washington bureau chief Nick Baumann, business editor Jeff Bercovici, books editor Boris Kachka, and music editor Craig Marks. The Washington bureau, photography and sports departments saw dramatic cuts, including several award-winning photographers. The video unit was hollowed out.

They can be classy because they actually do love The Times, and the journalism they did there. It was, and apparently still is, part of the culture there.

The really sad, horrible thing is that that sentiment is not shared, or recipr0cated, by the owner, or, for that matter, by the owners of most newspapers. The good in newspapers does not start at the top. Journalism at its best really is a noble profession of hearts and minds. The fact that it relies on money is what's damning, and unfortunate.
