I found it interesting that is the song the AP picked for its breaking news blurb: 'Beer For My Horses' singer-songwriter Toby Keith has died after battling stomach cancer

He's got several other songs that would be measured as much bigger and they went with that one.

I don't know. "Beer For My Horses" and "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue" are the only two Toby Keith songs I could name off the top of my head. I know he had a ton of No. 1s and I recognize his voice and sound instantly, but he comes from that 90s-00s era when country music was largely unlistenable. And I only connect him to Red, White & Blue because of the jingoism in that moment in time, not its quality.

Mainstream country remains unlistenable, but the 10s gave us the rebirth of independent country which has produced some incredible music.

I didn’t like the lean into jingoism (for him or for America) that Courtesy … came to represent. But I will always contend that it came from an honest place at the moment it was written.

Ate once at his "I Love This Bar" restaurant at Harrah's in Vegas, was open for 15 years which in Vegas isn't a bad run. Closed during pandemic. Google says there are two of those restaurants left, both in Oklahoma.

I’m not a big country music fan, but I’ve always enjoyed “How Do You Like Me Now?” RIP

Great voice - strong presence. Had a sense of humor about himself. Really seemed to be "the bridge" between Hank Jr. and the "bro artists" who followed.

An actual blue-collar guy who worked in the oil fields and as a minor league football player before his singing career took off. "Should Have Been A Cowboy" was a good debut. "Wish I Didn't Know Now" was a really great followup. Everything up to 9/11 was solid if not unremarkable, but "Courtesy" was terrible and not aged well. That's not what America is about to me, no matter how angry or vengeful the public might have been at the time.

Liberty. Justice. Peace. Tranquility. The Statue of Liberty is a welcoming beacon of hope, not to be used as a symbol of war and aggression. We're in an era of outrage about anything and everything, and that song is a perfect example.

    Otherwise, RIP.

I wonder what Kris Kristofferson's reaction will be upon hearing the news.
