This reminds me of a little known movement of Finnish-American leftists who settled in the Soviet Union in the 1930s to help build a worker's paradise. The group got caught up in the Stalinist purges of that decade, and a large number of them were shot or sent to labor camps. Here is the bio of one of the movement's leaders, Oscar Corgan.
