Carlos Sainz has appendicitis. Hopefully he has a ... smooth operator.

Also, he's being replaced by a guy named Bearman, which combined with the overwhelming Italianness of Ferrari, gives very strong "Vinny Vedecci e Seth Rogen" vibes.

IndyCar, the series no one seems to give a shit about, even though it produces good racing, begins this week for anyone that cares.

I'll care in six weeks or so when they get to Barber's. Won't care much after they leave.

On a bright note, it's opening weekend for the NHRA. I still can't embrace them opening with the Gatornationals instead of the Winternationals in Pomona. The Winternationals will start March 21 during the official beginning of spring.

I'll be watching, might be more action in a few laps tomorrow than in the entire F1 season.

IndyCar has had the same problem for a generation: marketing. The series has cycled through heads of marketing like they were summer interns and the marketing budget is anemic. Its answer to "Drive to Survive" is "100 Days to Indy" on the CW Network, not sure whether that airs before or after LIV Golf. It hasn't had a viable video game in years, a massive whiff with the young'uns. The most popular and recognizable drivers are still AJ and Mario. And on and on.

Yet the Indy 500 isn't terribly far from a sellout (as IMS defines it) and there are still some very good weekends, like this one in St. Pete. But as a whole, it's borderline amazing IndyCar exists at all.

It really makes no sense to me that IndyCar has fallen as far as it has. The 500 is still the 500 even though the race itself is not. Think back to CART in the '90s. That was a great series at places like Laguna Seca, Cleveland, Mid-Ohio.

Tony Stewart made his official Top Fuel debut this weekend at the Gatornationals.
Tony Stewart is an asshole, and I've had personal run-ins with with him over the silliest of things.
I hope Tony Stewart does well. I recognize and respect his talent as a race car driver, and him doing well would be a boost to the NHRA.
Tony Stewart will still be an asshole no matter how well he does.

Toronto used to be one of the major stops for CART, it was a huge event in the city in the days leading up to the race and if you didn't get tickets as soon as they went on sale you might be stuck with general admission, roaming the grounds for a vantage point. Now Fridays have been free for years and you'd never know it was even here if there wasn't constant bitching about the noise and road closures around the circuit.

NASCAR hasn't covered itself in glory re: marketing in recent years, either.

I find it interesting that one of the teams complaining about Penske's stewardship of IndyCar is Ed Carpenter Racing, which IIRC is still owned in part by Tony George.
