Currently we’re having a major debate here regarding housing of migrants, some of the undocumented variety. The state legislature just passed more millions to deal with it. The state guarantees migrants housing for X months, and the state is now paying for entire hotels to temporarily shut down so they can host migrants.

It is expensive, but I believe it’s worth it in the long run. These people will start businesses and work thankless jobs, supporting their families and doing whatever they can to better themselves and their families. Most will be very productive members of society. A handful will be knuckleheads and become incarcerated. That’s the same for society at large. Of course the RWNJs declare every one of them are criminals and rapists, like their Lord and savior does.

A question - if a migrant has been processed and is awaiting a court hearing on their asylum status - they really aren't undocumented right?
And this my be in the unpopular opinion category - but the "seeking asylum" thing is some scam some migrants have passed along to others following behind as a way to get through the gates....right?

No, seeking asylum is not some “scam.”

You really think the large number of migrants who are coming here are all being persecuted in their home countries on the basis of their race, religion, or persecution for some other reason?
Haiti? sure, and I know there are drug gangs and other groups in otherwise stable-ish countries in Central and South America - but I do find it hard to dismiss that most people crossing - either seeking asylum or refugee status, or illegally, are simply seeking a better life, particularly with our low unemployment numbers and strong economy.

Why the hell would they risk crossing the border without documentation if they had great lives back home? They’re coming here to better their lot in life, and in doing so they’ll better our country in the long run.

Texas medical panel won’t provide list of exceptions to abortion ban

    https://apnews.com/article/abortion...n-guidelines-a6deef7c6fa4917c8cdbfd339a343dc4

"DALLAS (AP) — A Texas medical panel on Friday rebuffed calls to list specific exceptions to one of the most restrictive abortions bans in the U.S., which physicians say is dangerously unclear and has forced women with serious pregnancy complications to leave the state.

The head of the Texas Medical Board also said that wider issues surrounding the law — such as the lack of exceptions in cases of rape or incest — were beyond the authority of the 16-member panel, twelve of whom are men. Only one member of the board is an obstetrician and gynecologist.

“We can only do so much,” said Dr. Sherif Zaafran, the board’s president."

I'm all for people leaving Texas. Just wish it wasn't a matter of life and death.

I totally agree with this. And its always been this way. The only sure path to stop immigration is make the US a less preferable option to what people face back home. So better economies in Central and South America seem to be the easiest solution. Honestly, more than half the people in THIS country qualify under the persecution angle just on the basis of their gender or sexuality based on SCOTUS rulings.

Yes, I think a very significant number are escaping horrible situations at home.

All of them? Certainly not. And they won't be granted asylum.

Much of the instability in Latin America is directly traceable to the fact that the U.S. government (or its business proxies) didn't care how much of an asshole your latest military dictator was as long as he wasn't a socialist.

Senate will pass the government funding bill, with votes starting soon.

As cocked up as our politics are right now, one constant remains. Nothing motivates both sides of the aisle more than trying to get out of town late on a Friday night going into a break.
