Hearing the "Oh this will only HELP Trump" from righties is hilarious. Any Biden voter that thinks the Trump prosecution was unfair and will only now vote for Trump? Was going to vote for him anyway. The conviction will probably affect those that don't want to willingly vote for a felon. And are worried what their friends might think if they did. It's not like he was caught post-dating checks on fuel for his airplane. It was money for a porn star he hooked up with while his wife was pregnant.

Remember how indignant righties were when Clinton just got oral from Lewinsky. This is crazy. It's like listening to the Five Stages of Grief.

Denial - This will only HELP Trump!!
Anger - We should start charging Democrats in MAGA states (whether they altered business records after banging porn stars or not).
Bargaining - Hopefully he'll just get probation. He's 77!! For God's Sake. He can't take prison.
Depression - How much have we sent him in donations this campaign cycle?
Acceptance - Well, maybe he can find one of his judges to toss the case.

King had a Letter from Birmingham Jail, Trump will have Tweet from Trump Tower.

"Here I sit, broken hearted - but on a gold toilet seat, yes, real gold. Wondering what has happened to America..."

Best part about that T-shirt is it reminds MAGA Catholics that not only is their hero a convict, but Biden still receives communion.

This is now out of my expertise, so I'll rely on actual lawyers on the board. However, that doesn't mean I don't have an opinion.

SENTENCING: I don't care if Trump is a first-time offender. These are 34 FELONIES, all with what @Neutral Corner mentioned carried sentences of 1-3 years each. I have no doubt the defense will claim First Amendment/candidate running for office as a reason to keep him from prison. But anyone not named Donald Trump would be facing a minimum of five/maximum of 10 years in a state penitentiary.

Having said that, the judge has to weigh the consequences of handing down either too lenient or too harsh of a sentence. I don't honestly know if the judge has the ability to defer serving any sentence until after a future time, say the first week of November. I'd be surprised if Trump gets anything more than lengthy probation/fine/community service. Even an ankle bracelet would be problematic for the election. So dreams of locking the big steel door on a big stupid dummy are pipe dreams.

APPEAL: Up until now, the burden of proof has been squarely on the prosecution. However, now it rests solely on the defense. They can't just say "we didn't like the outcome." There has to be a significant violation of the defendant's rights during the trial, and I think the judge went above and beyond in making sure Trump understood his right to refuse to testify, the prosecution's right to call witnesses and ensure there was no jury tampering.

They'll obviously appeal on some perceived procedural hiccup but that should get slapped down without comment. Remember, Trump is a private citizen (although at the time he was an elected official), so taking a State of New York vs. Donald Trump appeal to a federal court would require trickeration not currently in the Constitution, not that Trump actually cares.

I heard a really interesting segment on NPR's Morning Edition today. They had interviewed a Chinese high tech manufacturing executive who did not want his name or company name to be mentioned in the story, because the U.S. has a tech blacklist on manufacturers of self driving car technology, which is his business. This is about trying to choke China's access to cutting edge chips. The fear is that the same sort of AI chips that runs a self driving car could be used to construct AI piloted tanks. (!)

In any case, the point of the list is to keep China from buying bleeding edge tech and then tearing it down to reverse engineer it so that it can then be made by China. They want to prevent this. Anyhow, good story,

Put https://www.npr.org/ in front of 2024/05/31/nx-s1-4984996/chinese-entrepreneurs-aim-to-stay-off-the-u-s-trade-restriction-list The board won't allow me to post that URL.
