To be clear, the line you're quoting here comes from the editorial board of the Dallas Morning News.

    It's still a red flag.
We are past the mid-century struggle to identify that weird developmental doughnut hole between childhood and full personal agency.

You didn't have a Whip Inflation Now button?

I don't think George Washington or Abraham Lincoln could have survived the 1970s. You had the hangover of the Vietnam War, the terrible fallout from Watergate, two OPEC oil crises, stagflation and what seemed like a recession that lasted the entire decade, ending with the Iran hostage situation.

However, the real culprit was leisure suits. In pastels.

In retrospect, Ford's pardoning of Nixon was the right move because it allowed the country to begin to heal. But because it was unpopular, it killed any chance of his re-election in 1976. Don't forget, he was the target of an assassination attempt and the butt of jokes for every trip, fall or bad golf shot, despite being very athletic and intelligent.

Carter was a wonderful man who had zero chance of success. It didn't help that he wound up in disasters of his own making (pissing off the Washington dealmakers, 1980 Olympics boycott) and not (overthrowing of the Shah, runaway interest rates). He gets a bad rap for four years of malaise when he was easily the President with the most integrity and a strong moral compass.

But at a time when the country needed Carter to fib to us and tell us everything was going to be hunky-dory, he told the unvarnished truth. But that wasn't his style: He wasn't ever going to be a cheerleader. Reagan was a master at manipulating words (or at least communicating what his speechwriters were telling him to say).

Politicians as a whole weren't ideologically as far apart as they are now. The country wasn't as divided by states or regions, other than the Dixie Democrats. And nobody claimed "rigged election!" once the Watergate "smoking gun" tape was released. It was a different time, but not one I'd ever want to revisit. And honestly, the 60s -- with the assassinaton of JFK, RFK, MLK -- was even worse.

Morris's intention to mislead and misdirect with the phrase 'young lady' is pretty obvious. And egregious.

Not a man in a state of restoration or contrition.

But the 60s and 70s music (pre-disco) made it all worthwhile.

Disco gets a bad rap but it was a hell of a lot better than a lot of what I hear on the radio today.
