A Great Lakes Olympics centered in Chicago with events farmed out to Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Minneapolis would probably work. You could throw St. Louis and Detroit into the mix too if you set a 300-mile travel radius.

The Olympics could be placed quite nicely up and down the Acela Corridor. The marathons could be on the Boston course. Sailing at Newport. Track and field at Franklin Field in Philly. Tennis at the Tennis Center in Flushing. Golf at Winged Foot, Merion or Congressional And of course, all the cities have arenas for the indoor sports. The opening ceremony could be an old-fashioned ticker tape parade in Manhattan. Closing ceremony on the National Mall. Transportation would be an issue, but it isn't really THAT much more distance to cover than for the LA Games.

 

Actually I think if the USOC switched to a regional bid framework they would find a number of potential bidders.

US cities don't want to bankroll the massive facility improvements or submit to the massive travel disruptions necessary for one city to host the Games.

Switch it to a regional approach with a central city hosting the major ceremonial events and those burdens are spread way out. A Texas Olympics centered in Houston (with Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and OKC as satellite centers)? How about a Pacific Northwest Olympics in Seattle (Tacoma, Portland and Vancouver as the satellites)?

If you include all the D-1 NCAA schools inside your geographical umbrella, you'd have scores of potential hosting sites for "Olympic" sports.
Since Summer Olympics almost always take place at times when U.S. universities are largely shut down for summer sessions, college dorms could serve as "Olympic Villages" in many cases.

I could see Dallas as the hub due to Fort Worth and Arlington having multiple facilities right next door.

 

If the Games were held in March, maybe. In the summer? No way.

 

And the US took it away.
