I wasn't there, but had friends and co-workers there and I watched a feed of much of it.

The crowd size was something, man. Much of the top level was closed off but everything else was packed, including the floor. We heard capacity was going to be 15,000 and they hit that easily. The media coverage has been pretty extensive and positive. (We normally tape our politics show on Friday morning to air over the weekend, but this week we're doing it live to include the rally.)

The turnaround here has been pretty remarkable. A month ago we were wondering if we were even going to be considered a true swing state this time around -- polls showed Trump up 7 to 9 points. This week, a poll by probably the best polling place in Arizona has Harris up 2. The same poll has Ruben Gallego up 11 points on Kari Lake in the senate race. She's going to get steamrolled.

People have started calling Arizona a purple state but it's really not. It's a mostly red state. Still, we have a Democratic governor and two Democratic senators. The state GOP is firmly in the hands of election denying MAGA crazies. You can't win a primary without being a QAnon loon, and then those candidates can't win a general election, at least in a statewide race.

 

Walz has only himself to blame for any diversion away from the abysmal Trump. He intended to do it, and admired his own joke, Jim Gaffigan-style, right after he said it. Dumb move.
