R.I.P. John Amos

Like most working actors, he probably had one standard: "Will I get paid?"

 

Per an AP obit, he left Good Times because he felt he was being asked to play a stereotypical black dad role, plus it was becoming a vehicle for Jimmy Walker.

 

I always thought he was "the" TV father figure to a generation of black people, far more so than George Jefferson or Cosby.

 

I recently watched an old interview with him about it. He didn't choose to leave. He was fired. He said it was because he complained about the direction of the show, especially because there was too much focus on Walker.

 

Glad he got a curtain call 40 years later.
