I swear I've heard that in some form every cycle since Ann Richards in 1992.

One last thought. You know, spending four years calling anyone who might dare to not vote Democrat an enemy of the people, etc., is probably not a bright strategy. I know there's the cult/lunatic fringe, but if you spend enough time telling reasonable people that they're Nazis if they support someone other than the D nominee, they'll tune you out, and maybe just shove that vote back in your face. I think there was way more of that out there than we think.

Not that it makes a hell of a lot of difference but Trump will wind up winning the popular vote by about two-three million. Only half of California is counted and Trump lost that half by close to two million votes. New York also takes a long time to finish. Oregon and Washington allow ballots to trickle in for weeks. That will knock down Trump's plurality.

After all of the yammering about "Roevember" I found it interesting that a lot of the reproductive rights initiatives on ballots passed while Democrats didn't. That tells me that abortion does matter to the majority and they also don't trust Democrats to get it done.

Another thing worth pointing out from this: Harris was down double digits in the youth vote vs. Biden, but was up one point with those 65+.

Tell that to any liberal GenZer's you see bitching about old voters.

It's not just one thing, but as I get past my disappointment and look at things more realistically, I think that is the largest factor. It amazes me that people are stupid enough to think Trump is better for the economy. Elon Musk admitted his plan is going to be terrible for the economy. Most economists will tell you Harris's economic plan is much better. Trump bragged about influencing oil producers worldwide to lower production in 2020, a move that ultimately led to massive spikes in oil prices. That led to the high gas prices and inflation in general, things that slowly got better over the last two years under Biden's leadership. So, Trump caused the problem, got most Americans to blame it on Biden, and if we are very, very lucky, he will take credit for Biden's solutions.

Of course, it takes critical thinking and an attention span that lasts for more than five seconds to see all that, and yesterday proved that most Americans are lacking in those skills.

Hello from Ohio, which passed abortion protection last year IIRC 57-43 and has voted overwhelmingly for Trump the last three times.

Many of the women I am surrounded by in a MAGAland rural county who vote Republican don't think about abortion when they do. Many are pro-choice, but they care more about "the economy," immigration and the culture war bullshit ("gotta protect our kids").

FFS, she could have been on air 24/7 offering microscopic level views of her policy plans and it wouldn't have mattered. How do I know this? She articulated policy positions, while the other guy had "a concept of a plan."

The voters did not fucking care about her plans.

Just like in 2017 - when we forgot about "the real unemployment is 485735 percent!" and "GDP growth under 3 percent is a disaster" - I predict the economy will be deemed the greatest the world has ever seen on January 21, 2025.

I keep hearing this, and like the nerd I am, I keep thinking of this dialogue.

What did the galaxy ever do for you? Why would you want to save it?
Because I'm one of the idiots who lives in it!

Replace galaxy with United States and that's where we are. That's why I don't accept this logic. Even those who didn't vote for the orange menace have to live with the consequences of yesterday. My daughter has to live with them.

There were 155 million votes cast in 2020.

So far, understanding that there are numerous states still counting, including California, there have been 138 million votes cast in 2024.

The pandemic made it easier for everyone to vote. In response, Republicans spent the last four years making it harder for people to vote or at least throwing some confusion into mail-in ballots/early voting.

That's not the only reason for this result, but it's a factor.
