This made my eyes tear up.
Perhaps offer such materials to your local historical society? I've seen military uniforms displayed in county courthouses and VFW halls.
Your graf up there is one of the neatest ones I've ever read here.
    Thank you for sharing.

I get it. I totally get it. That's why my advice is to go through your own stuff so someone after you doesn't have the dilemma and get stuck holding the bag.

Great idea. I sometimes see them in antique stores. If someone can find use for it, so much the better.

My mother is a semi-hoarder (not as bad as on TV, but still not great). My wife has tried to get her to get rid of stuff (nothing valuable), for a long time, but after several emotional sessions (“Mom, that white phone cord is now brown, throw it out.”), I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve told my wife that Mom is more than 80 years old; life’s too short, and I don’t want to spend days debating whether to throw junk out. We’ll just do it after she goes. My wife reminds me that it’s still going to be emotional after Mom goes, and I said I’d rather just deal with my own emotions than dealing with my Mom’s emotions over junk.

Then there was my uncle (Mom’s brother), who lived pretty far away and whose apartment I hadn’t been to in more than 30 years. Uncle was divorced 50+ years ago, and lived alone. When he passed, we went to his place to see if there was anything we wanted. I opened up his nightstand, saw some envelopes, opened them up … and there were nude pictures of his ex-wife from 50 years ago. They got tossed.

The whole deal is a mental nightmare for the person doing the cleaning out.
It was easy for me to look at my Navy photo album and toss about 3/4s of the pictures because I knew whether or not they meant anything to me.
My cousin who might as well be my brother - both only children and the same age - have been on parallel paths doing the same thing the last few years. At least we can commiserate with each other. "WTF, dude?" "F dude, I don't know."

Dad was at a family funeral this week in Elizabethton, Tenn., which is just over the mountain from Boone. The main bridge over the Doe River in the commercial heart is closed for repairs. The secondary bridge downtown and the old covered bridge beside it have water marks up to the road bed (or former roadbed for the covered bridge, which closed to vehicles a while back). And all along the riverbank are debris from houses that were demolished in the flood waters.

Downtown Elizabethton didn't take it as hard as the Hampton area of Carter County. Hampton High School was destroyed, and what's left will have to be demolished. They have moved the students and teachers to an unused elementary school somewhere nearby, and are going to have to build a new high school, which will take five years at best.

A weak tropical disturbance is set to move slowly across the base of the Yucatan. No idea where it's going or if it amounts to anything when and if it emerges on the other side.

Nothing has even formed at that location yet. Same was said for Helene, though, and they nailed it.
