Yes, Jefferson. The Keydet who died was Thomas Garland Jefferson.

There is an excellent movie about the Keydets being pressed into service, "Field of Lost Shoes." I highly recommend it. VMI commemorates their deaths/service with full-dress parade of the entire corps and a ceremony ever May 15, the anniversary of the battle. Seen video, never seen it in person, hope to someday.

There is a scene in The Horse Soldiers that is sort of a nod to New Market.

Another Jefferson descendant fought in the Civil War, on the Union side. Hint: he served with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry.

What 1971 Top 10 song got producers fired from the Lawrence Welk Show because they thought it was a gospel hit?

Proud Mary? I just laugh thinking that song being done by Welk's crew.

No, but the song does reference Jesus and Mary, thus the confusion.

FWIW, John Wayles Jefferson was a lieutenant colonel in the Union army when he was wounded at Vicksburg. His father, Eston Hemings Jefferson, was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.

Back in 1980 my friends in Missouri thought of Brewer & Shipley like the Welsh think of Tom Jones. The album "One Toke" is on has a killer tune called "Tarkio Road." Those boys knew how to harmonize.
