Job Opportunity Dilemma: Love Location or Love Cash. WWYD?

So I’ve listened to a podcast on Belize. I’m going to go in the next two years and check it out.

I’d be giving up Gulf Coast sunsets (which I adore) but sunrise is cool.

We stayed outside Placencia, a couple hours drive from Belize City. Good luck if you have a heart attack or need frequent medical care, but it had pretty much everything else. There were a couple ex-pat bars that were nice. Of course five minutes away there were a bunch of dirt roads with shacks. The people we ran across were great, so warm and friendly.

 

I thought about that as well.

Maybe it’ll be a decent 55-60 year old chapter and not the “I’ll be sipping Ensure stage”. I envision my 84-year-old existence in Belize in a wheelchair, hooked up to oxygen and tapping a bell whenever I feel stress.

 

A friend recommended Dangriga in Belize. That was a number of years ago. I assume it hasn't changed much.

 

I'm not going to make it to 84 — not even close. I just hope to see my kids grow up and get launched into adulthood.

 

So I landed a promotion closer to where I live. YAY!!! Accepted it a month ago and hadn't heard anything since. Nothing. Not a peep. Checked with my site's HR to see if they could figure out what was going on and well, that was two days ago. So with my final day (I figured) approaching tomorrow and my new job starting Sunday (I hoped) I decided the hell with it and just went to the new place to make sure the job was real and not part of an elaborate phishing scam. Glad I went today because finding the place isn't easy. But even better was I met my new boss and realized we worked together a few years ago and he's a great dude. (The job interviews are done third party so there isn't favoritism). I start next Monday and work Tuesday, then three days off. A nice break.
But now I'm doing background check authorization (man, they really waited until the last minute!) and its taking so long, I once again am wondering if I'm getting seriously hacked!.

 

It always sucks starting a media job and being the new guy.

Three-four-six months later you're rolling, but those first two months usually are agonizing.

Especially when onboarding and follow-up communications are poor, too. Sink or swim, newbie!

 

I'm in that blessed sweet spot when it's just "Don't do anything to piss me off, and I'll stay. Piss me off, and I'll retire."

 

Welp, just got back from the last shift. I'm so looking forward to the new gig, but dang I started to get teary thinking about how much I've changed in the last five years. It was such a grind at times, so frustrating, and just getting the chance to say good-bye to my now-former co-workers was something I'm so grateful for. Its not like many were close friends, but we've all been through a lot together. Hard to believe I won't be walking through those doors again. Haven't dared to open the two cards they all signed for me.
