The converse of this is that John Elway (who was undisputedly an all-time great QB, I hasten to add) had lots of comeback wins during the first two thirds of his career when the Broncos weren't actually that good apart from him and were in lots of close games.

Modern QBs also have the advantage of kickers who can boom FGs from 60 yards.
When Johnny Unitas was trying to drive the Colts to a winning score, he knew he had to get it as close as possible, because it may be up to defensive end/kicker Lou Michaels (30.6% from 40+ yards) to win the game.

Now David Montgomery out with an MCL injury, severity not released yet.

Shit, the Lions may pull a Marshall and opt out of the playoffs at this rate.

That's why the Colts didn't try a field goal when they got inside the Giants' 10 in overtime of the 1958 championship game. Their kicker that year, guard Steve Myhra, made 40% of his FG attempts for the season and had already missed twice in that game.

Michaels missed 27- and 46-yard attempts in the first half of Super Bowl III. Setting the tone early.

Everyone knows Jim Turner was the real MVP of that game.

Not only is Montgomery out for the rest of season but McNeill is, too. Davis sustained a broken jaw.
Detroit has 16 defensive players on IR.
