Bill King, of course. Lon Simmons handed him the mic.

Will echo the praise for Howard's bio. Superb.

That’s a fantastic book about not only Rickey but also Oakland baseball history.

Even as a SFG fan I admired him.

I never understood why umps measured the strike zone based on his crouch.

I can just see people watching clips of Rickey during recaps of his career being stunned by all the fans at the Coliseum. People showed up for a good product. Its not like the Haas Family was losing money. They had a solid farm system, signed a sprinkling of FAs, Lansford, Dave Parker, Dave Henderson, but the bulk was homegrown.

I tried to do one of his swipe catches in the outfield when I was a kid. I think I broke my nose.

    From the MLB rulebook:

"The Strike Zone is that space over home plate which is between the batter's armpits and the top of his knees when he assumes a natural stance."

Crouching was Henderson's natural stance. Did it in every single at-bat.

Analytics have basically said Whiteyball was bollocks. Three NL pennants in six years and a world championship tell me otherwise, but whatevs. I kind of dug Tom Herr's five homers and 110 RBIs.

If there was a stat that explains how dynamic Henderson was: he once scored four runs and stole five bases while going for 0-0 in a game.
