It has become welfare, but abused much more. A couple kids I went to high school with have probably worked two jobs combined in their lifetimes because they’re on “disability” (and they applied for it multiple times before they were approved, somehow).

The problem with the "brand" is that the "poster boys" for the brand are 80 years old.

The amount of people I grew up with that were on “disability” was staggering. Slip and falls, injured on the job, qualified for the state pension and became disabled the next day. It was a racket. My dad had to retire in his early 50s because of back injuries. It about killed him inside to be declared disabled because he didn’t want people to think he was grifting.

Republican politicians are never held accountable for the things they actually say and do....but all Dems are punished because someone somewhere once said "Latinx" a word so obscure I have never heard a single Dem politician utter it and for months didn't know how it was pronounced because I only saw it in print.

I've helped several people get qualified for disability payments over the years. Every single one of them has been 1) truly unable to work; 2) wanting to work; and 3) a total nightmare to get approved. For people without much of a work history or whose work has been under the table/part of the cash economy - the monthly payments aren't even subsistence level. It was under $800 a month, last I checked. The cheapest rooming houses in the area charge $750 for a roach-infested room.

And folks like that need it. My cousin who went on disability from the railroad then worked as a cash-only brick mason for years when he wasn’t golfing doesn’t.
