NOPD superintendent said they had 300 cops around the Quarter, and from the sound of it the guy was subdued pretty quickly once he crashed out and they caught up to him. Sadly, the bad guys with bad intent almost always get to make the first move and can do a lot of damage before the cops can make theirs.

Honestly, I’m surprised this kind of thing hasn’t happened more often at smaller towns during the football homecoming parade or Christmas parade, or a Hanukkah or other religious event. Or a big running event, like the Peachtree 10k with a bazillion people crammed in a small area.

Watching one of the local TV stations cover this in real time is interesting from a journalism perspective. There are obviously a lot of moving parts as the police and FBI dive into this thing — it only happened seven hours ago — so you can see all of the bits and pieces coming together as they come in. An interview here, a press release there, all give scraps of new information.
A congressman from New Orleans just said something that I don't think had been reported yet (or at least confirmed), that the truck had Texas plates but the attacker was believed to be a local.
WVUE has been doing a good job with relevant live reports and studio coverage.

Hey, don’t worry, the Sugar Bowl will be played as scheduled.

And postponing it solves what problems? In addition to the ones it would add?

Well, Tim McVeigh drove a Ryder truck. Terrorists to have to come in fancy rides.

Police, ATF and FBI have cleared out a block on Mandeville Street (about two miles from where the attack took place) and are investigating a house there. No confirmation that it's connected, but the presence of the ATF and FBI would lead you to think it is.

NYT reported that some sections of Bourbon were in the process of having metal bollards replaced, would be awful if this ends up somehow tied to faulty infrastructure -- then again it's New Orleans on NYE, someone bound to run over pedestrians can do it well off Bourbon too.

From what I can remember from many trips to NOLA, the spot where he got onto Bourbon — its intersection with Canal — doesn't have them and is open to traffic, although there are always plenty of pedestrians in the street. The metal poles at each intersection start a block or two in.

Don;t forget the Marathon bombing. That happened at exactly that kind of event.

It’s telling that we’ve allowed “terrorist” to be defined as a foreign dude committing an act of terror and not simply labeling anyone who commits an act of terror as a terrorist.
