Another thing to be careful about is trapped white space, especially with your side-saddle captions. For example, on the NBA page you could switch the position of the trophy picture and the caption beside it. That pushes the white space to the edge of the page and makes it look less awkward. The same problem comes up with the Wie cutline, the USC headline and the smaller Tiger photo. Also, re the Tiger page: you need to pick one main image and let it dominate the page. The biggest thing on there is a little less than three columns (cutout) and not especially deep.

I once worked at the paper these designs came from. Canned features? Local trend stories? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

The paper tends to think small and it shows.

The paper may thinl small. There's no reason he has to do likewise.

Their attitude explains the VERY high turnover, trust me. It's hard to think big when every idea you have gets shot down, FWIW.

Thanks for the backup sportschick. Yes, like I said b/f they were stilted, regimented and unwelcome toward change. And she's right, every idea I had to improve the look of the section was shot down. And your suggestions, dixiehack, were fine, except impossible b/c of some of their style rules. Except for the cutline on the NBA page, you're right about that.

OK, thought I'd post and see what people think about the Bakersfield Californian. For those who don't know what Bakersfield did, here's the story:

and here's a nifty piece about how much papers are starting to look alike (true, this is about front pages, but can we really say sports is that much different?)

    Here's a couple of Bakersfield's sports pages:

The changes in the paper overall  have led to an 8-13 percent increase in single copy sales and starts exceeding stops by a 15-to-1 margin. Ad sales are also way up.

    So, what does everyone think?

My first thought was 'whoa, too much colour,' but after thinking about it and reading the story (from the second link) it's already growing on me.

I've seen design like this come out of Mexico and Europe, but not so much North America. It's daring and I'm sure was a big challenge for the designers and editors there, but if readers love it and the content's the same, who are we to say no?
