A heads-up, folks. I just talked to our guy at the track, and everybody needs to keep a close eye on the wire tonight.

He's not having the surgery until tomorrow morning, but he's far from out of the woods tonight. The problem is the lack of blood flow to the injured area, and if that gets worse, the horse could die on its own before it ever goes under the knife.

Damn. Thanks for the heads-up, Shottie.

    Why the wait, Shottie?
Are they trying to stabilize him or do they think he'd not make it through surgery right now?

The AP gets a lot of shit on here, but their coverage has been wonderful so far. The sidebars I've read -- even Litke's story -- have been moving.

Must be stablized first. Vet says break through the gate a non-factor, wouldn't have been able to go back around and re-start.

Geez. Hate to say it but it sounds more and more like we're going to need an R.I.P Barbaro thread. Sad.

What a horrible day, a disturbingly unforgettable one.
I was there at the finish line when Charasmatic pulled up and Antley jumped off to cradle his leg. It was so chaotic, because every second counts. This was so much more difficult for Edgar because of the stride, where he was on the track, having to pull him up at full gallop. Alex Solis is also a hero for maneuvering Brother Derek when he heard that sound, when he knew it was big trouble.
Some posters have mentioned his erratic behavior before the race. The fact that he busted the gate...he just seemed out of sorts to me. He's always been boorish, cocky in the paddock, but this time he appeared almost disoriented.
It's all just like one big nightmare.

I remember the coroner ruled that Antley died from a fall, but I remember another (earlier) story saying he had such severe head injuries his body had to be indentified by dental records. Pretty fishy.

Antley was a kind but troubled soul.

The ugly underbelly of horse racing claims a lot of people, and unfortunately Chris just couldn't be helped.

    Chris Antley story

Note: Toxicology reports from the autopsy were released today and his death has been ruled as an overdose rather than homicide. Four different drugs were found in his system and it is theorized that he became delusional from the combination and various locations around the house to account for the numerous cuts and contusions before dying. His wife, Natalie Jowett, is currently in the hospital giving birth to their child.

Isn't that about all any of us can do?
