I know I'm late to the dance Doc Jones, but ...
In the headline from the Sports front, "Back-to-back losses to Champanville end Lady Hawks season" it should be Lady Hawks' (possessive).
    You're referring to their season.

As far as the All-County front goes, I would do something with the top sub-head.
"Sherman's India Stone chosen as 2006 All-County Player of the Year."
You've already told me this is the 2006 All-County Softball Team with the massive headline, plus that it's the All-County team with your softball roster, plus that India Stone is your player of the year with the pull-out photo with her name and "2006 All-County Player of the Year" above it, plus this is the 2006 All-County Softball team with the type running behind the diamond (see how it gets repetitive?) Maybe something more specific to Stone's performance for the subhead. Or a reverse/smaller hede signifying this is the All-County team, with the big headline being about Stone ("Stone's throw ...") and the subhead about her heading the team ("Sherman junior goes 22-1 to top all-county selection" or something like that.)
Also, you might want to use different type/size on the players on the diamond. You want their names to stand out first, then school, then position. Currently it looks like they're all the same size and font.

    Good Doc:
On the Indy/Charlotte front, the "Able Kahne" headline looks weirdly spaced. If you're on Quark, you can pull the bottom line closer to the top.

Yeah, I had it Lady Hawks' to begin with, but my SE changed it, and same goes for the India Stone subhead, cause to the left, you see it, but God forbid I go behind my SE's back and change what I had...

    Doc, a few observations:

1 - Why can't you have white space behind the diamond? The page would look far more professional. White space is a good thing when you're doing feature layout.
2 - Why do you have a photo behind a photo for the player of the year? If you expanded her photo and took out the kicker above it, then you don't have the subhead saying the same thing twice
3 - The headline: How about "Best in County" or something... that's just so bland. Use a subhead above the headline to say that it's the all-star selections.
4 - Flat cyan is an awful colour. Use something less 80's, maybe take a colour similar to what you've got in the diamond.
5 - Consider a different font colour for the player positions under their mug shots to differentiate (already mentioned)

Maybe it's an obvious question, but I'll ask it anyway: Assuming this is the sports front, why does this deserve this kind of treatment? You've got a WWIII headline on there for an all-county softball team. Is it that big a deal that Joe-Blow is gonna care?

Rounded corners on a box! Yes! (I'm such a dork.)

All joking aside, I like the approach, I like the leadin, I hate the "which he did" line. Especially when it doesn't get the same punctuation the lead-in did. But that's just me.

That U.S. Open page is a great effort at storytelling, but it's too busy for my taste. Too many pictures clutter the page.

Those things are fun when you have something called jump space.

Good eye. Actually, for some reason, the second period fell off the PDF. But it did print, in all our editions.

Slap in the face to Ogilvy.

Build a big ol' splashy package inside.

It's be nice to actually see THE FACE of the U.S. Open winner. But that's just me.
