His legend grew by hitting home runs gopherballs in his last All-Star game, and, I believe, in the game he broke the games played record.

SI.com's Tom Verducci just named Jeter the first half MVP. Thought some of you might enjoy that.

Try comparing Ripken in his prime to the other shortstops at the time. Yes, he gets a bit too much credit because of the streak, but he was the dominant player at his position at a time when you didn't have the kind of hitters at shortstop you do now.

Actually, it's usually the Yankee fans ripping A-Rod. Spoiled SOBs

Uh oh, looks like I stuck a nerve there.

On baseballrefrence.com, at the bottom, they have a category called similar batters. Nine of those 10 with comparable numbers to Sandberg aren't in Cooperstown. (Only Bobby Doerr is.)

For Brett, the first eight names are all in Cooperstown. Brett trumps Sandberg in runs (1,583-1,318), hits (3,184-2,386), doubles (665-403), triples, (137-76), home runs (317-282), RBI (1,595-1,061), walks (1,096-761), batting average (.305-.285) and pretty much all else, save for stolen bases (344-201).

And Brett only hit .390 in 1980.

I'm familiar with baseballreference.com. Thanks, though. And you didn't strike a nerve. Ryno's in the Hall of Fame -- where he belongs.
