    Negative reinforcement.

Newspaper people believe in negative reinforcement. People in many other fields believe in positive reinforcement.

Well, Tom_Petty, you're free to say who Tom_Petty really is. But no one else is free to say who you are. If you wanna post with your real name, knock yourself out. But considering some places have fired folks for posting here, being sacred about anonymity is a good thing. Plus it puts people at an equal level in debates; otherwise, an agate clerk from Coffeyville might be hesitant to put forth an opinion that might be contrary to what Rick_Reilly or Gary_Smith believes.

That's a philosophy that works splendidly over at ACES. They brag about it.

But I think Tom's question is why the thread had to be nuked because a poster basically outed himself with all that juicy Star-Telegram inside soap opera stuff. If the problem is not with the ripping but with the outing, all he did was out himself, not anyone else. And if we're free to do that, as you say, then what's the problem?

And before you go off on me, Moddy and Co., I'm not saying you did the wrong thing (though it sure was interesting material). I'm just delivering my interpretation of Tom's question.

But what if that wasn't the case at all?

I think it's good for Moddy to protect people from themselves in some cases. There's a couple of guys who wish he had done so. And it wasn't a case of a person giving his real name, which is what I'm talking about.

You mean the gossip? It wouldn't be the first time incendiary rumors of dubious accuracy were posted on here. I think people know when to take things with a grain of salt, or at least when to be skeptical of unsubstantiated information. I mean, we're all journalists here, right? Or at least most of us?

thanks for your input dooley, but i rather would know the 'official' stance. hence the reason i asked the question to begin with.

You didn't just ask that, did you?

People have various and sundry reasons for wanting to stay anonymous. The biggest one is to avoid problems in the workplace and we go to great lengths to respect that. I posted on the old board under my name and most on here know who I am - I've told many just because they asked though I won't do that for everyone. We're running about a 2-4 percent asshole population here and there are some folks I just don't trust. Of course, one time someone I did trust blabbed it to people but that's another story and it ended up causing no problems.

But it is not true posts were nuked and threads were locked because people were outing themselves. That's their call and I'm out of the protecting people from themselves business. There were hints about others in those posts and, having dealt with said poster before, I knew exactly where it was headed.

No one has the right to reveal someone else's identity for them. You want to reveal your own, go right ahead.

whoa, you're reading way more into my question than, well, just the question. as by my newbie status, i'm fairly new here. i thought this was a site created to allow sports folks talk about the biz without worrying about receiving a pink slip come monday ... or whatever mondays are to sports folks.

i've just read others, such as the kc bbq dane grubber, attempt to mock people because they were abiding by the very reason this board was created. i always thought whoever was posing as daneboy might of been intoxicated (on something) when making posts here. i'm sure the real jason whitlock wouldn't be so ignorant/stupid to argue the point of why this board was created to make himself appear intelligent. i'm really sure of that, really.
