Memphis looks for college basketball writer

Just my opinion, but I don't think there's any question the Memphis job is better.

Memphis is a bigger city. Bigger paper. Better sports section.

Birmingham may have nice suburbs, but its downtown area is downright scary. The whole town has a rundown, ugly, industrial feel to it.

 

i don't know which is better, but i do know i applied for memphis and not birmingham

 

mmm, designing women. now there's a quality show.

 

Just stay away on New Year's Eve. Too crowded and totally miserable.

 

This may be a great gig, but M-town is not a great city. Check it out and you'll find it is one of the most dangerous cities in America. I've lived there and can attest to the fact that it is a war zone. Sure they have graceland, and a beautiful safe downtown district, but watch the nightly news and you'll see two-three shootings. Amongst the locals it's known as Memphrica-need I say more.

 

FWIW, I llived in Memphis for several years and never heard it referred to as such. Maybe I didn't hang out with the right "locals."

Memphis has a crime problem, and there are definitely areas of the city to avoid, but it didn't strike me as overwhelmingly worse than any other major city. There are also plenty of nice neighborhoods in the city to choose from -- downtown, midtown or on the east side.

 

I like both towns, but if you are worried about crime, you are going to be sadly disapointed in Memphis.

Memphis is bigger, and has the Grizzlies to boot. Close to Tunica casinos (hence the boxing beat) and is a hub for Northwestern (not sure if that's a plus or minus).

Birmingham has nicer scenery (unless you dig cotton fields over mountains), a shorter commute from the nice suburbs and is less isolated from other metro areas. Plus the newspaper is Newhouse (as opposed to Scripps-Howard).

 

What are the chances the C-A is looking for a baseball writer, either for the Redbirds or some other baseball beat? I've been bottled up at MiLB.com's NY office for the last two years and I think I could use a change.

 

Has this been narrowed down to four finalists? Two in-house and two outsiders? Just curious.
