Charlie Weis is An ASS

Here is link to story that got Weis so upset. If anything he should be upset with Clausen and his handlers for showing up in white stretch Hummer for his PC announing his intention to enroll at ND for 2007.

As usual with the work of Jeff Caroll it's a well researched and well written story:

What ND did to these 2 reporters is a disgrace. I sure hope that the Southbend Tribune is giving them their full support.

Anyone who is a member of this site should be up in arms over this.

It's because journalists try to adhere to this little thing called objectivity. Would you prefer if the players themselves voted for the best player in college football?

That's ironic, because Notre Dame and Tennessee fans love each other. They've played six times in the past 15 years or so, and a nice, friendly rivalry has come out of it. I think they split those six games, too.

And we all know, that's one short of the NCAA record. That should make for a fun countdown in South Bend.

While enjoyable, this discussion has yards to go to match the entertainment value of the Redskins fanboy thread.

Also, it seems the "journalists" here share Carroll and Weineke's knack for commenting without actually researching anything. They were told not to ask questions because they wantonly disregarded protocol by contacting an ND player without permission. This is why they are now being given the cold shoulder, not because what they wrote was negative (though most of it was ridiculous anyway).

Irish Rugby is wrong. The writers were told not to ask questions because their series was deemed too negative and one-sided by Heisler and Weis, who believed the stories should have carried tags of "analysis" or "commentary." Paddy Mullen was contacted when he was still in high school.

Irish Rugby, there's a spot on NDNation waiting for you. You'll fit right in with the El Kabongs of the world..

Thought I'd jump in on this fun little convo, albeit a little on the tardy side.

Look, I'm all for indiscriminate access for all journalists covering ND, but isn't it Charlie's job to do what he deems necessary to maintain the desired culture and attitude surrounding his team? If he wants to direct the program in a certain direction and manipulate the press in his favor, how is that different from a politician using the press as a means to motor his/her campaign forward? Obviously, no journalist will appreciate being told their access will be slimmed down if they write something Charlie doesn't approve of, nor should they. But Weis has to ensure that he runs things his way. And if manhandling the swarm of press that descends on South Bend every fall is his strategy, you can't exactly blame the guy. And something tells me he could care less if a bunch of writers thinks he's an ass. He knows that as long as he keeps winning, and he upholds the academic standards at ND, he's virtually untouchable.

At the same time, it's up to the journalist being censored to stand up to Weis and maintain his/her integrity. That may be hard to do, but so was uncovering something like Watergate (no, I don't equate the significance of Watergate to Weisgate...just posing a possible comparison). And for the record, I'm no Notre Dame lover. I went to a MAC school...the biggest controversy there is whether Ben Roethlisberger was a better college QB than Byron Leftwich.

Right--Charlie has a job to do. But plenty of coaches manage to do the same job without punishing reporters for doing their jobs, or making life hell for anyone who doesn't buy the bull.

You want to be a leader and a teacher and a shining example for your players, coach? Show them how to treat people with class and dignity. No, the media isn't always fair, and it isn't always right. So show them that a professional handles problems with maturity and directness...not with snivelly threats and punitive attacks.

The subject heading of this thread fits even better now then when I first wrote it. At that time I had no idea that Weis had censored the Trib beat reporters from asking questions.

My opinion was based on  the one little snippet that ESPN show. I thought that  he came across as a real arrogant A-hole.

Now we learn that he is even a bigger one.  It's one thing not to answer questions that are asked but another to not even allow the reporters to ask the questions in the first place.

Agree that reporters must not back down but its also important to know going in that their paper has their back.

How this plays out will be very interesting to watch.

See, extending this line of thinking a little farther... Weis thinks he has a job to do. So he is doing it--whether he is right or wrong about his methods. It seems to me that the best way to convince him that he is harming his program more than helping it is for the coverage of Notre Dame to reflect the restrictions he is putting on any media member who isn't a homer. Ask the tough questions--it's your job. I understand playing ball to get something in return, but that usually entails small favors in return for small favors. It seems like the restrictions they are putting on media members cut right at their ability to fairly cover the team. So do your job the way you think is reasonable, and if you get denied access because of it, work as well as you can within the confines to give your readers coverage. But make it clear in your coverage that Weis is a tyrant and the university is not as open as comparable D-I programs. Enough hard-hitting columns pointing this out, combined with the crappy coverage that comes from lack of access will eventually have an effect--especially if they come out of the gate poorly.

After reading that, my first thought was that if they have another Michigan State game early on this season, the media backlash is going to be harsh.

What's interesting it that all of these Parcells disciples all seem to be cut from the same cloth when it comes to arrogance. We are now seeing it from Mangini. We see it from Francesa and he is not even a coach.
