The Jackson Citizen Patriot, a 35,000-circulation daily in southern Michigan, has a full-time sports opening for someone who can do it all but has a special talent for copy editing and design.
The perfect candidate will be a well-rounded hard worker who wants to be the lead designer but still wants to write now and then. The person will work a late night/early morning shift with lots of weekends. Daily experience is preferred, but recent graduates with college newspaper experience will be considered.

Jackson isn't all that happening of a place to live, from a couple trips to visit family there. It does, I hear, have a small ghetto, though.

At least you're within shouting range of Ann Arbor and Lansing on weekends.

 

Can someone define negotiable....

Negotiable in relation to experience, or just another way of saying "we're not going to pay you much, but let's make it look like we're flexible?"

 

To answer previous questions, "Bleiler" left for a job at Michigan International Speedway years ago and has since come back as a copy editor on the news side.

"Negotiable" means you have to pick an option when you post the job on journalismjobs.com, and most papers aren't in the habit of posting real numbers. Booth pays well. Trust me on that.

A ghetto? Not quite. You are in driving range of a lot of cool places. Jackson doesn't have a major league sports franchise, but it is a good place to call home. Someone I know says: "It's a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there."

 

Driving range is right. Lots of golf courses in the area, which makes it fairly cheap to golf at some pretty decent courses.

 

There's a ghetto, right down the road on Francis St. Don't paint the home to the world's largest prison with a colorful brush. It has some decent golf, but the economy stinks and the nightlife is non-existent. The only plus, East Lansing is a 30 minute drive north.

 

Chris, when you say writing opportunities exist "now and then," how often is that? Once a month? Once a year?

 

Writing opportunities depend a lot on the candidate, how the person handles the job and what his or her interests are, but whoever it is will have daily involvement in the section outside of page design. No one will be chained to the desk. Everyone here from the part-time guys to the sports editor does a little bit of everything, including writing, answering phones, reading page proofs, etc. We need someone who wants to do it all, but the job is focused on design and editing.

The job is evolving, so pinning things down like how often the person will be writing is tough. It used to be a 2 a.m to 10 a.m. gig doing just copy editing and pages, but we're altering the way we do things.

 

Sounds like a nifty job. Good pay and bennies and the chance for a page designer to write every once and awhile, perfect for when that urge to write strikes. City close enough to Lansing, Ann Arbor even Detroit for, um, to see the Tigers play.

 

Sounds like another copy editing position has become everything but.

 

Goddammit, Dye Pack. NO ONE, not even d_b is as much of a one-trick pony.

Maybe, just maybe, this was never a copy editing only position. Maybe, just maybe, every newspaper desk in the world is not out to destroy you.
