The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, a 33,000-circulation daily located on the Western Slope of Colorado, has an opening for a prep writer/copy editor. We consider high schools a major beat, and we’re looking for someone who won’t get stuck in the “preview, gamer, feature” rut, but will take some chances on story approaches and can find the story within the game story. This person will work with another prep writer to cover four local high schools (with two more planned), plus 30 more in surrounding cities and towns we call our own. He or she will develop enterprise stories on a regular basis and will also work one or two desk shifts a week. Working nights, weekends and holidays comes with the territory. The Daily Sentinel is a Cox Enterprises newspaper that offers competitive wages and full benefit packages, including medical, dental and vision insurance. I am told the SE is good people.
Grand Junction is the 'big' city' on the western slopes.

 

I nearly took this job out of college and it's a good starting point for a recent college grad. Grand Junction is a cool little town with plenty of outdoors stuff. I can confirm Patti, the SE, is good people. And not too shabby of a golfer, either.

 

Patti is a great helper when it comes to that there JUCO World Series. She should get Selig's job for her work there.

 

I thought that was Pati with one T.

The Juco World Series is a cool thing to cover if you ever get the chance.

 

What does "gold-medal water fishing" look like?

 

I was both impressed and surprised there was no mention of design, luring in readers visually, knowing Quark and/or InDesign, etc.

 

any idea what this position might pay? and what's the cost of living like out there? pretty reasonable or very expensive?

 

By Colorado standards, Grand Junction is just OK in terms of natural beauty.

If you've lived in the Midwest or in an Eastern city all your life, it's paradise.
