A homer vote for McFadden?

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Football_Bat, Dec 5, 2006.

  1. Is she hot? Is she even worth the drama and all this speculation?

She is a beautiful woman, yes. Is she worth getting riled up? Better cover your ass wherever you can. She's not a woman to be trifled with. :D

Back to the original topic... I can't imagine why anyone would take issue with someone voting for a player who is going to finish in the top three for the Heisman... If you ever have the chance to see the entire Heisman voting, like everybody who receives votes, you would be stunned... Division II guys, Division III guys get votes now and then...

Did you expect anything else around here? Not that that is a bad thing.

    A couple simple points.

Scott Cain is good people. And a damn fine journalist.

The Heisman Trophy is the most subjective award in the most subjective sport known to man. By a country fucking mile.

And I voted McFadden first, Troy Smith second, too.

Arkansas wasn't supposed to do much this year. McFadden, Felix Jones and a pretty salty defense changed all that. We know the Hogs are pretty limited at quarterback.

Ohio State was loaded, is loaded, and is gonna be loaded for bear against Urban Meyer and Gainesville's favorite reptiles.

OK maybe that was more than two.

Rarely do I feel the need to enter the fray, but in this case I felt it was necessary to defend Scott Cain.

Cain is not a "homer." He is very skilled journalist and an outstanding beat reporter. A few years back he covered the NCAA's investigation of Arkansas and from what I recall he received a lot of grief from the Democat-Gazette readership for pursuing the story. He has also been known to ask tough questions of both Houston Nutt and Stan Heath.

Just because he thinks McFadden is the best player in college football right now (quite a few people do) does not mean he is a homer. That term is passed around too easily and in this case it's not applicable. Heck, Pat Dye said McFadden is the best running back in the SEC since Bo Jackson and Herschel Walker. That's pretty strong praise from a guy who has coached the game and follows college football pretty religiously.

The point is if you knew Scott and had seen his body of work you would have never make such a bold and inaccurate assumption. He's a great guy and a better journalist.

How can anyone in this thread possibly criticize Cain for picking McFadden? Are you telling me that he's the first voter in history to pick someone other than the favorite in a year shaping up to be a Heisman runaway? If, say, the South Bend Tribune writer voted for Quinn, does that make him a homer?

Turn it around and see if any Ohio-based voters are NOT picking Troy Smith--does that make them "anti-homers"? Should they then be singled out and chastised for being reverse bias?

If anyone has any gripes about who is voting for whom, then just ditch the current friggin' process and use a BCS computer to pick the Heisman winner. That ought to shut up a few folks.

By the way, I voted for Ray Rice, and I detest even setting foot in New Jersey.
