Maybe I need to get out more often, but I've never heard "Shit the bed". I'll definitely use it in my next girls HS soccer gamer.

Pierre de Coubertin would never say something like that.

If he did, he probably said it in French.

Nope. Dr. Evil says, 'Sick. As. A. Dog. Gonna vomit.'

One hopes, although I guess maybe not, if the party in question was nude with an erection in a kennel during a tornado.

I think Rick Santorum came up with "effed the dog." Which is perfect, since santorum is itself a contribution to the postmodern lexicon.

BTW, I like Mystery Meat's transcultural vulgarity...

because everything pertains to Seinfeld, the eating the chocolate bar with the knife and fork episode is a good illustration of how this stuff becomes popular.
People see it, or in the wow case, hear it, and through some bizarre social insecurity begin to repeat it, thinking it is what everyone is doing or saying
Soon it becomes pervasive, regardless of its merits

I may have an answer to the original question. At least a partial explanation. It may have come from the Simpsons, most notably the Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show episode. That's the first time the Comic Book Guy says, "Worst. Episode. Ever." That was back in 1997, so I don't think it's all SportsJournalists.com's doing.
